3-5’ tall and 1-2’ wide. One of the dominant grass species of the tallgrass prairie, Indian grass makes a lovely addition to wildflower meadows, providing late season color and winter interest. Also stunning planted en masse in garden beds or as a vertical accent. Indian grass is a host plant of the pepper-and-salt skipper. Birds feed on the seed and collect dried stems for nesting. Highly adaptable to most soils including heavy clays, shallow rocky soils, and poor drainage. Ideal for poor, infertile soils and dry sites. Limit water and fertility to keep plants upright. Indian grass tolerates black walnut trees and is effective for erosion control on slopes. Cut plants back in late winter or very early spring before new growth emerges.
